Marria Buchan, Owner & Maker

Growing up on Vancouver Island, I have always had a heart to reduce, reuse and recycle. Initially, my motivation to learn to sew was to make my own doll clothes. That love of sewing grew as I studied pattern design, dress making, and tailoring. All that remained a passion over the years. In 2019, I decided to turn that side-gig into a full-time job. Bringing together my eco-warrior heart, and my capabilities as a sewist, along with my education in business management, I started Practical Homestead in March of 2019.

Practical Homestead’s product line is all handmade in Winnipeg, with the exception of some USA Etsy orders which are now being made by our daughter, Beth, who lives in Nebraska.

Our products provide reusable solutions to reduce waste in the home. The core products are the CONTAINER/BOWL COVERS. These are made with a food-safe, and waterproof lining. It is fridge, freezer, washer & dryer safe! Imagine not using plastic wrap to cover a watermelon, wooden salad bowl, Kitchaid bowl, pie plate, soup bowl, or a pet food can. Our in-house designed BREAD BAGS, offer an amazing solution to keep bread fresh on the counter, fridge or freezer. Our top seller is the CHEESE WRAP. Wrapped around an open block of cheese preventing drying out and mold growth. Other products in the line are snack & sandwich wraps, bowl cozies, potato bags, produce bags, unpaper towels, dish scrubbies, Swedish dishcloths, cosmetic wipes & soap saver/scrubber bags.

Thank you, for supporting handmade at home products that reduce waste while being practical!

Our Difference

I sew at home, not a factory, which has low carbon emission by not commuting somewhere else. I use the highest quality cotton/lining/elastic that I can source. It costs more, but our products last longer than others.
